DENTAL PAIN. CAUSES AND TREATMENTS

Dental pain can originate from several causes. Endodontic Pain is caused by damage to the nerve and blood vessels (the pulp) of the tooth. This results from large caries (cavities) that are very close to or into the pulp. Endodontic pain can also be the result of cracked teeth. Endodontic pain is usually treated by root canal therapy. The decayed portion of the tooth and the canals in the tooth roots are cleaned out, dried and sealed. The tooth is then rebuilt with a filling and subsequently crowned. The alternative to endodontic treatment is extraction of the tooth.

Periodontal pain results from infection and inflammation of the gums and bones surrounding the teeth. Gums are often puffy and bleed during brushing. Tissue death and bone loss (receding gums) often result in tooth sensitivity. Advanced cases of periodontal disease may have puss in the gums and a bad taste is present.

Periodontal Problems are treated by a thorough cleaning of the teeth and roots above and below the gum line. Improved homecare after treatment and regular dental cleanings can reduce or stop bone and tissue loss around the teeth. Teeth that are very mobile, as a result of bone loss, are hopeless and should be extracted.

Sinus, Ear Infections can also cause pain that seems to come from the teeth. These patients complain of dental pain that comes and goes and more importantly seems to move from one tooth to the other. This is because the nerves from the upper teeth run along the floor of the sinuses. Sinus pressure or infection can stimulate the nerves from the teeth to the brain. Other neurological disorders are known to cause perceived tooth pain. Patients with these types of pain are often referred to ear, nose and throat specialists or neurologists.
